2007 Finn Veterans Championships Waiuku Auckland 3-4 March 2007

The Finn Veterans Championships were held at Waiuku on the Manukau Harbour from 3 to 4 March 2007. The regatta was held in conjunction with the Waiuku Autumn Regatta in a change in format for the first time in it’s 22 year history. 6 races were scheduled over the 2 days to decide the Finn Veterans Champion. With light winds experienced over the weekend all 6 races were windward-leeward’s. 9 boats competed over the weekend with good racing being experienced by all.

The first race started in a 2-3 knot breeze from the SW with large shifts. Justin Hurst went right and was rewarded with first to the top mark. He continued to lead until close to the top mark second time when David Hoogenboom found more breeze on the right side and sneaked around the mark in front and led to the finish. The second race saw the appearance of Alan Dawson rounding first closely followed by David Hoogenboom. Alan led all the way until the bottom mark before the finish when David snuck in under him and managed to win by a nose. The third and final race of the day had the breeze building and steadying with Alan again round first followed by David. At the bottom gate Alan went left and David right. Fortunately David locked into a right hand shift to secure a handy lead to the finish.

Day 2 was again light but from the north east this time. The OOD set a course well into the bay close to the Needles. Race 4 saw Brett Graham, Geoff Letcher and David Hoogenboom find breeze on the left with David rounding first and retaining the lead to the finish. Race 5 again saw more breeze from the left with Gerrit Bearda rounding first from David and Geoff. Up the second beat Gerrit and David crossed tacks a number of times with David securing the lead at the top and carry this to the finish. This gave David 5 wins and the championship.

The final race saw a significant wind change just before the start forcing the OOD to postpone and reset the course for a SW breeze. Gerrit again led at the top mark with David second and Brett Graham third. David was again able to get ahead to finish with a perfect 6 from 6. Alan secured second overall with Gerrit and Brett sharing third.

This was Gerrit's first podium finish showing good speed throughout the weekend. He put this down to the work he'd completed stiffing a mast he’d previously discarded and was a fitting result for the work he's put into his Finn over the past 2 years.

Overall a good regatta, well run as usual by Waiuku Yacht Club.

South Island Finn Association – Third Ranking Regatta 17 and 24 February 2007

Maurice Duncan

The third ranking regatta for the SIFA was held over two weekends on consecutive Saturdays: 17 and 24 February 2007 at Naval Point Club, Lyttelton. There were three starters for the four races on 24 February. Courses for all races were windward/leeward followed by a trapezoid. The race on the morning was held in good weather with a dying southerly – if fact some (DM) might say it was dead. The course was shortened to a trapezoid only. Maurice Duncan was able to find some wind and able to keep ahead of Chris Wells with the distance between them varying from less than a boat length to much more. Denis Mowbray found (or perhaps did not find) the wind elusive and withdrew to score a DNF. A nice 15 knot easterly filled in for the afternoon and combined with an incoming tide giving flattish water resulting in ideal sailing conditions. Denis won all three afternoon races with Chris a close second and Maurice not too far behind them.

On Saturday 24 February there were two races on the same course as for the previous week. It was raining for the first race and the easterly wind was in excess of 20 knots and gusting another 5. Just to make it interesting the wind was against the tide resulting in large steep faced waves with the occasional roller. Just two starters- Maurice and Denis. Maurice was the first to capsize – a result of having too much kicker and consequently digging the boom into the sea when attempting to turn for the run at the top mark. Denis capsized twice - both during the gybe at the bottom end of the outer leg of the trapezoid. However, on both occasions he was well out in front and won both races by a good margin.

2006_2007 Finn National Championships Kohimarama Auckland 9-12 February 2007

The Finn National Championships were held on the Waitemata Harbour from 9 to 12 February 2007. The regatta was held in conjunction with Sail Auckland and organised by the Kohimarama Yacht Club. 10 races were scheduled over the first 3 days to decide the Nationals and the Finns were then involved in the Medal race on the final day of the regatta. Courses were trapezoidals with the number of windward-leeward legs on one side of the course varying depending on wind strength and sailing time available.

Unfortunately the numbers attending the regatta were well down with only 5 boats competing. These included a visiting dutch sailor Sander Willems and South African Brett Graham who had recently migrated to NZ with his family. Special mention must be made to Ben Winters who travelled from Christchurch for the regatta.

The wind on Friday was light to moderate with the breeze dying in the first 2 races. The first race saw only Dan Slater and David Hoogenboom finishing in the time limit. Dan finished the first day with 3 wins from 3 races to start a solid defence of his Nationals title.

Saturday started with a 2 hour postponement due to a lack of wind with a 10-15 knot easterly finally filling in at 1.00pm which allowed the full complement of 4 races to be sailed. Dan again completed a clean sweep with 4 more wins.

Sunday was again lighter for the first two races but was sufficient to allow the racing to start on time at 11.00am with the 3rd race filling in to a good hiking breeze. David threatened to take a race with a well sailed first beat in the first race of the day however was caught on the run to the finish by Dan to record his 8th straight win. The 9th race finally saw David prevail with a good lead again at the first mark which he didn’t relinquish to finish 1st and inflict the only blemish to Dan’s record. The 10th and final race again saw Dan return to winning form with Ben Winters recording the 2nd of his two 3rds of the regatta.

Monday saw the Finns compete in the Medal Race with an exciting match racing duel in the pre-start between Dan and Sander. Unfortunately Sander infringed on the line at the start and had to do a penalty turn allowing Dan to clear out for a comfortable win.

Overall a good regatta, well run, with good sea and easterly breezes over the weekend.

Canterbury Finn Championships 2006/2007

Maurice Duncan

The Canterbury Finn Championships for 2006/07 were sailed at the Charteris Bay Yacht Club on 2-3 December. The format was 3 races back to back each day. The racing was well and tightly run with the tail enders barely having time to catch their breath before the warning signal for the next race. For the first day of racing the wind was from the north east 20 knots gusting 25. While this wind did generate some waves they were smaller than the fleet is used to on other parts of Lyttelton Harbour. Conditions for Sunday’s racing were similar but the wind had dropped to about 15 knots. Line honours were shared equally by Ben Winters, the eventual winner, and Denis Mowbray. Denis’s chances were reduced when the prod of a capsized R-Class went through his sail between races (don’t ask how) and he had to withdraw. Chris Wells, defending champion, was very consistent with seconds for all races to count. Maurice Duncan and Ralph Traber had their own battle close behind the others. It was good to see Matt Arthur back on the water. Mike Pearson was a welcome addition to the fleet having put a new sail on Ben’s old boat, but a collision of his head with the boom (haven’t we all done that) meant a withdrawal for stitches and advice to stop racing for a week or two. CBYC confirmed it legendary hospitality. The results are in the table below:

South Island Finn Championships Naval Point Club Lyttelton 28-29 October 2006

Maurice Duncan

The South Island Finn Championships were held on Lyttelton Harbour on 29 and 29 October at a very well run regatta organised by the Naval Point Club Lyttelton. The courses were quadrilaterals with the number of windward-leeward legs on one side of the quad varying depending on wind strength and sailing time available. The wind on the Saturday was a strong cold easterly and there was heavy cloud resulting in very cold sailing conditions. Sunday was much warmer with occasional northerly winds shifts that benefited some and caught others out. Ross Gibb from Dunedin was a very welcome addition to the predominantly Canterbury fleet.

The contest was emphatically won by Denis Mowbray who won all races but the first and in spite of a capsize in one race. However, he was hotly and closely pursued by the fleet in some very close racing that saw many place changes during racing and between races. In the last race Andrew Macgregor got past Denis on the last down-wind leg and reach but Denis was able to pass him on the final beat to the finish. Ben Winters won the first race and was always in the hunt.

North Island Finn Championships Thames 14-15 October 2006

The North Island Finn Championships, the first regatta of the 2006-7 Finn Ranking Series, took place in Thames over the weekend of October 14th and 15th. Nine Finn sailors made the trip to enjoy the 10 – 15 knot winds experienced over the 2 days. The regatta is held in Thames every year and is very well run by the Thames Sailing Club.

Some of the Waiuku sailors arrived Friday to get some pre-regatta practice in. However some of those sailors went on a wee outing on Friday evening and were looking a bit worse for wear the next day. The 3 races sailed on Saturday in a 10-12 knot south west breeze were all won by David Hoogenboom in his newly upgraded boat from part time Finn sailor Brent Hamilton with Christine Headey following in 3rd.  Alan Dawson was seen occasionally when his head and memory cleared sufficiently however never long enough to threaten.

After a relatively quiet Saturday evening the slightly clearer headed sailors took to the water Sunday to a 12-15 knot westerly which was forecast to build to 20-25 from the north west. The first race saw Alan, Brent and Christine take advantage of a 20 deg left shift up the first beat and maintain their positions to the finish. Normality returned for the final 2 races which David Hoogenboom won to take out the 2006 North Island Championship by a comfortable margin.
