2010 Finn Nationals Maraetai Yacht Club
4 - 7 March 2010

The 2010 NZ Finn Nationals sailed at Maraetai 4-7 March was won by Mark Perrow in a display of consistent sailing and a degree of good fortune in a boat borrowed from Dan Slater.

For 8 races over the first 3 days Dan produced a clinical performance to win them all and looked on track to complete the task on the final day. However he was a no-show on Sunday when the final 3 races were sailed. This meant he carried a DNS and allowed Mark to finish ahead on 16 points against Dan's 26.

17 boats contested the Nationals with 3 travelling from the South Island. Until just prior to the contest 22 boats were expected however late withdrawals saw this number reduce. This is the largest fleet to contest the nationals for many years and continues the growth in fleet numbers and interest in the class.

Racing over the 4 days saw a full range of conditions from 25 Knots gusting 30 from the SW on Thursday to no wind for most of Friday with 2 races finally being completed when the SW arrived after 4.00pm.

Saturday and Sunday produced excellent sailing conditions with 10-15 knot easterlies that allowed Race Officer Richard Brown to complete the full 11 race series.

Good close racing across the whole fleet, well run by Maraetai Sailing club and volunteers.

South Island Finn Champs Timaru
21-22 February 2010

A great regatta in Timaru with very tight sailing is light conditions. As always in Timaru there was a swell but the nor-easter on Saturday added a nasty cross slop that made downwind sailing in particular quite challenging.

At the end of the 6 race series there were 3 competitors on 10 points however a protest saw the final result

1st Denis Mowbray 9 points
2nd Chris Wells 10 points
3rd Tom Brien 11 points
4th Hugh Dimock
5th Maurice Duncan
6th Matt Wells
7th Gary Griffith

FYI - Tom borrowed a boat and switched from a Laser to a Finn for the contest – he is a handy sailor coming 13th at the Laser Nationals.

Auckland Finn Champs Pt Chevalier
21-22 Nov 2008

Report by Alan Dawson

The Auckland Finn champs were sailed at Pt Chev Yacht club over the weekend with 9 boats entered. OOD Don Oliver and his crew of helpers set great and true courses which made this regatta an excellent event. Both days saw the races sailed in a true westerly breeze between 10<>15 knots and increasing to 20 plus on Sunday. What a great sailing venue with good sailing water and lots of helpers to retrieve trailers etc.

Race 1.
Roger Hall NZL242 (IRL) started the regatta in perfect fashion by clearing out from the fleet and looking fast up and down hill. He took the 1st of his 3 guns for the day. Brother Ray Hall NZL232 (McDonald’s) chased hard for a good 2nd with Alan Dawson NZL23 keeping him honest and taking 3rd place. Kevin Stone NZL235 sailed well and made up lots of places down wind to take 4th. Class Secretary John Duff NZL55 5th, Dirch Andersen NZL229 and Jim Goodare NZL227 finished 6th equal, Gerrit Bearda NZL193 and the Thames yacht club commodore Stu Munro NZL9 fought out the minor placings finishing in that order.

Race 2.
Roger H takes his 2nd gun. The racing is starting to heat up with the fleet finishing a lot closer than race1 as the sailors start to work out the venue and the best way to attack the course. Roger H and I finished over lapped with Ray H 3rd and Kevin S 4th only seconds away. Gerrit B had his best result with a 5th place.

Race 3.
Roger H has his 3rd gun for the day. I had a winning led at the top mark for the last time, but am still struggling to hold the advantage down wind. This was a problem all regatta, and I will need to address it before the nats if I want to be a threat. Nzl 23 2nd and the fast finishing Ray H 3rd. Kevin S has is third 4th placing of the day, Mr consistent. Dirch Andersen, with a good 5th place to end day one.

A few of the boys stayed in the club rooms Sat night , Before lights out we went to the Manukau fishing club for a couple of quiet ones and catch up with the Hartley 16 boys who had been racing on the Manukau harbour. “Slept like a baby”

Sunday saw an increase in the breeze, up to 20 knots. A big day at the office for the fleet.

Race 4.
Ray H took command of the building breeze and dominated this race. His new rig looked very powerful. Roger H 2nd and Kevin S a fast finishing 3rd and very close to a 2nd. Well sailed Stoney. I dropped off the pace with bad down wind speed and finished 4th. Jim G 5th.

Race 5.
The regatta was starting to really heat up with placings still up for grabs. The races were that close the boats were finishing within seconds of each other and testing the OOD on the finish line. Roger and I had a real ding dong battle, me pipping him by 3secs. Roger said we may as well be playing rugby against each other. That’s how tough it felt. Ray H 5 secs behind for 3rd place. 4th to Jim G for his best result with Dirch A 5th.

Race 6.
The last race. All the boys feeling the heat with some going to shore. The breeze was up to 25 plus and the bodies were hurting, but still placings to sort out. Ray H and I had a real go at each other crossing tacks up the beats. But the old legs were starting to burn and the young buck took charge. Well done Ray. Me 2nd. Roger 3rd. Kevin S 4th Dirch A 5th.

Racing over and to the prize giving. One race to drop and last years champ retains his trophy. Roger Hall 1st. Raymond Hall and me 2nd equal, him winning it on a count back. With Kevin S 4th. 5th Dirch A. 6th Jim G. 7th Gerrit B. 8th John D. 9TH Stu M

Roger H 1 1 1 2 2 3
Ray H 2 3 3 1 3 1.
Alan D 3 2 2 4 1 2.
Kevin S 4 4 4 3 6 4.
Dirch A 6 7 5 6 5 6.
Jim G 6 8 6 5 4 dnf.
Gerrit B 8 5 8 7 7 dnf.
John D 5 6 7 dns dns dns.
Stu M 9 9 dnf 8 8 dnf.

Thanks again to the Pt Chev club members and to "Doyle sails" for the prize giving sponsorship. The Fleet has come a long way in two years. Lets keep it up.

North Island Champs Thames
8-9 Nov 2008

Report by Alan Dawson

Saturday turned out to be a real drifter of a day, and some can drift quicker than others. Two of the three races were shortened to one up and down, that’s how light the conditions were.

Notables for me is the speed improvement of those that have invested in new gear and, or done mods to their boats,

Dirch “the slippery sly dog of the fleet” sailed very well. His C-tech mast, my North sail and the mods to his boat made him the front runner after day one. He finished the 1st day tied with Gerrit who sailed his best in a long time. Gerrit, using his North sail and the new boom he has made and all the mods to his Finn, came together and the combination was fast.

On Day one Dirch and Gerrit had a jump on the fleet and ended up match racing. Most rules went out the door and new ones were invented every time these two crossed. We nick named these two JUSTIN and HURST after the first day on the water. HA HA.

Jims new C-Tech and Doyle sail looked very powerful. He spend so much time studying his new rig that he ended up with sun stroke and could only drink water and rest up, he was that burnt. Jim woke up the next morning with a wallet full of money that he had planned to invest in the bar that night, but he could only drink water, and that was free. Jim asked me if I was keen to stay another night so he could make that deposit over the bar. We stayed and finished off all their rum and ventured home. Your new rig will surprise a few this season Jim.

Butches’ wife has an investment in his Finn now, as she gifted him a new Doyle sail. Man you are lucky to have such an understanding misses. “But does she know about it”. Might pay to keep this a secret for a while. Anyway what an improvement to your speed and height the new Doyle sail has made. The way you lead a race on Sunday and held on to that lead to win looked impressive.

Duffy had a steady regatta and was fighting with the lead most of the time. I thought you loosened up on Sunday and sailed a lot freer after the 3 bottles of red wine at the sat BBQ.

It was good to see Peter and Margaret Hull come down and support the Finns on Sunday. The rivalry between Peter and commodore Stu on the water is healthy to see.

Roger and I had a different sort of regatta. We struggled to get clean starts and didn’t sail the conditions that well. Roger improved on Sunday a bit where I still struggled. The amount of time Roger has put into the class and to individual boats and rigs has upped the tempo big time. Im sure now he will spend some time on his preparation now the rest of us are up to speed. Look out.

I broke my traveller by sitting on it trying to go faster down wind. This is not my excuse for a below par performance as I enjoyed the regatta and the sight of the 10 Finns fighting to become the North Island champ.

Christine gave me some advice on how to go faster up wind. I need to keep my Finn flatter as she thought my staking style wasn’t doing the job. I was using my legs to hold the boom out after the traveller broke I told her. She suggested I put on a bit more weight. “ Bloody woman”.

Now to the winner Raymond Hall. The first day wasn’t the kindest to the pre regatta favourites. Ray needed a Good Sunday. With the breeze more suited to everyone some of the boats started to show their true form. Ray picked up 2 wins to take the lead and the Trophy off Dirch, Butch and Gerrit. Ray has spent a lot of fine tuning time on the water and is very motivated to have a good season. His purchase of a C-Tech mast and Doyle sail combo sure looked the bees knees when the wind kicked in. Well done Ray on behalf of the Finnsters. I'm sure brother Roger and nzl23, along with the rest of the boys, will be gunning for you at the Auckland champs at Pt Chev next month. Congratulations.

A list of thank you's is needed. Christine, for OOD and RO. A well run regatta and good courses considering the variable conditions. President Ron and his helpers, for making us feel most welcome.

Commodore Stu, for organising the regatta, and being around to accommodate our needs over the weekend, and allowing the boys to stay in the club rooms. To the club members, and called in helpers that gave their time. The meals and BBQ were great and the on water staff did a fantastic job.

And to ex Finnster John Farquar and family, for the Sunday morning BBQ. Snapper for breakfast is hard to beat.
