2008 Nationals Waiuku 21-24 March 2008

Friday 21 March
Day one dawned with no wind and unfortunately no racing could be completed.

Saturday 22 March
The Black Heart Finn National Championship being raced at the Waiuku Yacht Club, got underway today, after racing was cancelled yesterday through lack of wind.

Pre regatta favourites Craig Monk and David Hoogenboom dominate so far, with only one point separating them at the moment.

Conditions for racing were light with some significant wind shifts. Overall the racing is very close with a good mix of placing amongst the skippers outside the first two.

Sunday 23 March
Olympic medallist and America's Cup sailor Craig Monk continued to dominate racing in the Black Heart Finn National Championship being raced at Waiuku Yacht Club.

Having won the National Championship 8 previous times, the last in 1996, Monk has not been at the helm of a Finn for 7 years, this has not limited his results in the current fleet.

David Hoogenboom has established a strong second position with places after that still wide open for the final day of racing on Monday.

Conditions for today have been light NW breeze.

Monday 24 March
At the completion of the competition Craig Monk is the Black Heart Finn National Champ, this is Monk's ninth National Championship. Monk has not been competitively sailing Finns since 1996, clearly he has not lost his touch and dominated throughout this years Championship.

David Hoogenboom was also very dominant at the front of the fleet taking a convincing second place overall.

Further back positions were very closely fought with tight finishes and positions changing in every race.

2008 Finn Veterans Champs Waiuku 8 - 9 March 2008

The Finn Veterans Championships were held at Waiuku on the Manukau Harbour on 8 and 9 March 2008. As with last year the regatta was held in conjunction with the Waiuku Autumn Regatta.. 6 races were scheduled over the 2 days to decide the Waiuku Finn Veterans Champion.

No wind Saturday brought an abandonment and sailors retiring to the bar and barbeque dinner.

Sunday was again light from the South west enabling 4 races to be sailed. Race 1 saw Roger Hall find good breeze in the left rounding the top mark well ahead of the fleet. David Hoogenboom patiently eroded this lead and overtook on the final run to win with Alan Dawson 3rd. Race 2 saw David executing penalty turns on the start after colliding with Kevin Stone while the fleet sailed away. The Race was eventually won by Geoff Letcher from Bruce Morris and Craig Canute 2 more Hartley 16 sailors joining the fleet for the first time in borrowed boats.

Race 3 and Gerrit Bearda, Kevin Stone and David Hoogenboom starting and finding more breeze on the left to round the first mark in that order. David then stretched his legs and won comfortably from Gerrit with Kevin 3rd.

The final race and John Duff found another gear with his new sail and breeze to the right showing a clean pair of heels to the chasing pack with a wire to wire win from Geoff Letcher with David Hoogenboom 3rd.

Overall a great regatta, well run as usual by Waiuku Yacht Club.

Finn Spring Regatta Waiuku 10-11 November 2007

The Finn Spring Regatta was held at Waiuku over the weekend 10-11 November 2007. This event is the second regatta of the 2007-8 Finn Summer Series.

Saturday provided light winds with 2 races sailed over windward leeward courses. David Hoogenboom won the first race from Kevin Stone and Gerrit Bearda. Race 2 proved you can never take Waiuku for granted with David tacking to cover while ahead up the last beat only to sail into a hole and watch 3 boats continue to sail in good breeze up the left to the finish. The race was won by Kevin Stone from Alan Dawson followed by Gerrit Bearda.

Sunday arrived with no wind and a postponement flag. Just as the tide turned however a south west breeze appeared and 2 short sprint races were run. The first won by David and the second by Gerrit.

2007_2008 Finn North Island Champs Thames 3-4 November 2007

The North Island Finn Championships, the first regatta of the 2007-8 Finn Summer Series, took place in Thames over the weekend of 3rd and 4th November 2007.

Saturday brought 6-10 knot winds allowing 3 races to be sailed. David Hoogenboom won the first race comfortably and scored a rare 1st equal with Christing Headey in the second race while nursing a sail pulling out of it's track requiring a conservative last beat. The final race of the day was also won by David with Christine second and Alan Dawson 3rd.

Sunday dawned with a building northerly forecast to increase to 40 knots. Against the Race Officers recommendation a decision was made to race and 6 boats ventured out to the start. On arrival it became clear the wind had built significantly to 30 knots gusting 35 so 3 boats immediately returned to the beach leaving 3 boats to race a single short triangle course. David decided not to risk damage to his new mast and returned to the beach leaving Christine and Alan to fight it out. At the wing mark Alan gybed and capsized with Christine chosing a more conservative head-to-wind rounding. However on easing off struck Alans mast. After a further capsize and penalty Christine finished ahead of Alan. A decision was then made to abandon further racing.

With only 4 races sailed and no discard Christine Headey won the event from David Hoogenboom with Alan Dawson 3rd.
