Finn Nationals 2007 Notice of Race
Please find attached the Notice of Race for the 2007 Finn Nationals
to be held in conjunction with Sail Auckland from 9-12 February
2006.
Measuring for the Finn Nationals
You will note in the Notice of Race all boats will need to be
measured prior to the event. This is due to a lack of facilities
at the venue.
Gerrit Bearda, Matt Wells and I have agreed boats measured for
the 2006 Nationals that have not been significantly altered since
that event will be exempt from measuring for this event. Only
boats that have not been measured for the 2006 Nationals and that
intend to sail in the 2007 Nationals will need to be measured.
I will be returning copies of the completed measuring forms from
the 2006 Nationals to the relevant owners. I will also be providing
a copy of the International Finn Association Measurement Certificate
which is a summary of the boats identification details, measurement
status and owners declaration. These 2 documents will form the
basis of the measurement record for the boat and will be recorded
in the boat register held by myself. The onus will be on the boat
owner to ensure the boats measurement certificate is current and
the boat remeasured if significantly altered.
This Measurement Certificate must be presented at the Finn Nationals
registration.

NZ Finn Ranking Regatta Series
As a reminder the regattas above are the first 2 regattas for
this years Finn Ranking regatta Series.
The intention of this series is to foster greater competition
and to bring the North and South Island Finn fleets closer together.
The structure of the Ranking Regatta Series is as follows.
Best 3 regattas will be used to establish ranking points.
Points will be calculated based on the number of boats racing
in each regatta. eg If 10 boats attend then 1st place receives
10 points down to 10th place which receives 1 point. Therefore
every boat receives ranking points at each regatta.
NZ Nationals will attract double points. eg if 15 boats attend
1st place receives 30 points down.
Sailors in each Island have the opportunity to sail in the maximum
3 regattas to gain maximum points.
A trophy will be awarded to the highest ranked sailor in the series
and the ranking list will stand until the start of the next season.
The revised ranking list will be distributed with the monthly
NZ Finn Update thru the season.
The remaining regattas in the series are as follows;
Spring Regatta Waiuku 4 & 5 Nov 2006
Nationals Auckland 9 -12 Feb 2007
Autumn Regatta* Waiuku 3 & 4 Mar 2007 (Changed from previous
email)

Finn Qualification System for 2007 ISAF Worlds
I have been in discussion with Yachting NZ regarding qualification
for the 2007 ISAF Worlds to be held in Portugal in July 2007.
New Zealand expect to get 2 places for this regatta based on the
following;
1. YNZ automatically qualify for 1 entry into this event.
2. The allocation of a second and subsequent entries is available
based on the results from the 2005 and 2006 Finn Gold Cups.
3. Based on Dan Slater's 6th in 2005 NZ should have a second entry
(Thank you Dan).
Based on this the following criteria has been set for selection
to this regatta.
1. Finn Sailors must score in the top 50% of the fleet in at least
one ISAF Grade One Event from 1 June 2006 to 31 May 2007. (This
could include Sail Auckland, Sail Melbourne or Sydney International
Regatta).
2. Finn Sailors must score in the Top 10 in the NZ Finn Ranking
Series for 2006/2007.
3. First place available will automatically go to a 2007 Olympic
Squad member.
4. Conscious that final selection and entries are made by YNZ,
in a bid to ensure Olympic qualification, and that YNZ reserve
the right to make subjective selection(s) in exceptional circumstances.
What this means is there is an opportunity for one additional
sailor to be selected to compete in the 2007 ISAF Worlds in Portugal
in July 2007 based on participation and results during this New
Zealand summer.

To foster greater competition and to bring the North and South

of the Ranking Regatta Series is as follows.
Best 3 regattas will be used to establish ranking points.
Points will be calculated based on the number of boats racing

C-Tech Finn Masts
We're now in production for this high quality, affordable Finn
mast produced by C-Tech. The locally designed and built mast was
engineered from the ground up using desired Finn mast bend characteristic
as the benchmark, combining the performance of a wing mast with
the price of a round mast. Price is $2650 + GST and Freight.
Please place your orders thru me. Email or call me on 098133445
if you wish to discuss this mast further.
I've included a Flyer with details and photographs of this mast
for your information.
There will also be an article in the next FinnFare about the C-Tech
Mast. Due out shortly so look out for it.

Incorporation of the New Zealand Finn Association
Following on from the South Island Finn Association registering
as an Incorporated Society I believe the NZ Finn Association also
needs to seriously consider this option. I propose to raise this
as an agenda item at the AGM to be held in conjunction with the
Nationals in February 2007. I approached the SI Finn Association
about this last month and they endorsed this at their AGM. The
benefits of doing this include the following
Used by not for profit organisations where members have a common
interest.
Has a minimum of 15 members.
Controlled by a set of rules drafted and agreed by the members.
Property or assets are owned by the society.
No personal liability for the society’s debts, contracts or other
obligations.
Some Banks provide accounts free from fees. (NZ Finn Assoc. currently
spends over $100 per year on fees).
Can assist with obtaining grants from Charitable Trusts for the
purpose of funding travel to international sporting events.
One-off Application Fee of $100 payable.
Required to file an annual financial statement.
I'm happy to start an email discussion on the merits and disciplines
in applying for and running an incorporated society.
Finn for Sale
I've recently purchased Dan Bush's Lemieux (NZL12) so my old boat
(NZL234) is for sale. The boat is down to weight and was 6th at
the 2006 Nationals and 1st at the Waiuku Veterans Champs. You
can see pictures of it on the C-Tech mast flyer attached with
this email. The boat is available either complete with CFM round
mast and sail on a beach trolley or as a hull only. Contact me
to discuss further if you're interested.
If there are any other boats or gear for sale let me know and
I'll distribute the details and include in the next monthly update.
Subscriptions
The Finn Association Subscription period runs from 1 October to
30 September each year. I will send out details of how you can
pay your next years subscriptions in the October Newsletter. For
those current members you will still receive the latest Finnfare

Finn Gold Cup
Great news. Melbourne has been confirmed for the 2008 Finn Gold
Cup. This is going to be an awesome regatta. Being an Olympic
year all the Olympic hopefuls will be there so the racing will
be amazing.
Draft Schedule is as follows;
Finn Australian Nationals 7 - 11 January 2008
Sail Melbourne 14 - 19 January 2008
Finn Gold Cup 21 - 27 January 2008
As with the previous Gold Cup in Melbourne in 1995 we will be
requesting additional places for New Zealand and judging by the
interest so far there is a good contingent of New Zealanders keen
to go.
Will keep you posted with developments. If you're interested let
me know and start sailing soon. It's only 18 months away.
A complete copy of the Australian Finn Association Proposal can
be found on the International Finn Association site at the following

C-Tech Finn Masts
Those Finn sailors interested in getting a new high quality, affordable
Finn mast should look no further than the new Finn mast produced
by C-Tech. The locally designed and built mast was engineered
from the ground up using desired Finn mast bend characteristic
as the benchmark, combining the performance of a wing mast with
the price of a round mast. Price is $2650 + GST and Freight.
Alex Vallings at C-Tech is always busy and is getting even busier
from now leading up to the summer. I'd recommend if you're going
to order a mast order it now. If you do you should expect delivery
by early September. If you leave it another month don't expect
it till November.
If you want to order one can you email me back.

2006/2007 Finn Nationals
We have confirmed the Nationals will be held in conjunction with
the Sail Auckland Regatta. from 9-12 February 2007. Sail Auckland
has been confirmed as a Grade 1 ISAF Ranking Regatta. If we can
attract 15 Finns points gained in the regatta will go towards
ISAF ranking. This will make the regatta attractive to International
Finn Sailors so lets get behind this regatta and make it a success.
It'll be a great early indicator for Melbourne in 2008.
Finn Booms
The Australian OK Dinghy Association has a die to manufacture
booms from. The Aust Finn Assoc. is talking to them at the moment
about producing a longer version for the Finn's. If there's anyone
out there looking for a new boom to replace an old one let me
know. The Australians are keen to get a gauge for numbers to put
an order together.
